We are married now for 35 years and travelled to Weinheim. It was - as usual the hottest day of May. We wanted to go out for a meal, but the fridge was well filled.

Frankfurter Oper Igor Strawinsky - The rake's progress

Hier wie Üblich die Beschreibung aus der Oper Frankfurt

THE RAKE'S PROGRESS
Igor Strawinsky
1882 – 1971

Oper in drei Akten

THE RAKE'S PROGRESS
Igor Strawinsky
1882 – 1971

Opera in three acts
Libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman
First performed September 11th 1951, Teatro La Fenice, Venice

About the piece

Igor Strawinsky was a revolutionary man: the son of one of the most important opera singers in Tsarist Russia, he soon showed a remarkable talent for improvisation. After studying with Rimsky Korsakov he went on to cause a storm in the music world when his ballets were performed in Paris, where he became great friends with Pablo Picasso and Coco Chanel. He spent half a century in exile as a French and American citizen before visiting his home country again in old age, after it had been liberated from Stalinism.
The highly successful world premiere of The Rake’s Progress took place in Venice in 1951. It was inspired by William Hogarth’s well-known series of satirical engravings and tells of a young man seized by restlessness. Tom Rakewell can’t take his leave from his »better half« Ann Truelove quick enough when a stranger, Nick Shadow, promises him a large inheritance and an exciting future far away from his easy idyll of love. Tom Rakewell wants travel, freedom, happiness, money and success – and stumbles from one disappointment to the next. Torn between different expectations, contrary conceptions, euphoria and melancholy, he is finally engulfed by great weariness. In the end everything was nothing more or less than the theatre of life.
This Tom, with his shadow, annoys and stimulates us because he confronts us with our own, often abstruse, designs on life. Strawinsky leads us on an adventurous journey through operatic history. The work contains eye-twinkling references to prominent predecessors. Parodies on Handel and other musical echos abound but it is still pure Strawinsky.

Tom awakes and collapses. All characters reappear reminding the audience that the Devil finds work for idle hands.

It was all entertaining, nice music. I thought, it would be modern.
And now the pictures of the cranes. I don't know, how it will look the next season.

Gartenrotschwanz - Redstart

Today when I removed the bulbs of the tulips, I noticed that the redstar was flying to the Vogelstandarte. I haven't noticed, that there was already a nest and now the little birds have to be fed. From our seat at the Römerterasse we could watch the birds.

Karlsruhe Quiltausstellung - Karsruhe The Colors Guys

The weekend is to short, for all the offers. But as a fan of Kaffe Fassett, Karlsruhe is a must. The
exhibition was neatly arranged, but the number of the stalls - for me to much. But at least I could buy the two latest books and could sign it.

Meine zwei Aufnahmen
My two pictures

Botanischer Garten Frankfurt - botanical garden in Frankfurt

As usual nice, good offer, agreeable prices. But you should know something about plants and especially for the shrubs you must be open for the offer and not for your list, what you want to buy.
Afterwards a walk in the botanical garden.

Textilmarkt Seligenstadt - textile market in Seligenstadt

Unfortunately, the number of textile markets in Hessen dropped. Therefore, it is good, that in spring a market takes place in Seligenstadt. Seligenstadt is a little town at the Main and is well worth a journey.
The herb garden and the orangery of the Benedictine monastry are worth seeing. Thursday is baking day and you can buy the fresh baked bread from the oven - attention long queue. And there is also a quite nice coffee.
The market, which is held at the first weekend im May, exhibit in the abbey - among other in the monk's cells. . There is also an Advent-Market in December.
From Sa 13.10.12 - Su 14.10.12 is the textilmarket in Michelstadt (needling - from thread to art work).  Michelstadt and the market is as well a journey worth

Tröge bei Majorahn - Trugs at Majorahn

I saw it last year, how to make a trug, but it is quite another matter, to do it by yourself, that means to work with the spoon. Tht trugs were already finished (it needs about three days to dry, before you could work with it). Then you have to take it from the mould - be careful, it is possible, that it will break. Then you have to work at the core, outside you have to treat it with the brush and spoon - also here is risk of breakage. And afterwards the holes for the water have to be made  - attention  risk of breakage. Afterward Anne Rahn showed us, how to plant the trug and we had to fill the mould with the 'dough' (mixture of cement) again.
But, all has been worked out in the end. I will show a photo later.
