Basel: Ausstellung Gauguin und die Merian-Gärten –Basel: exhibition Gauguin and the ‘Merian-Gärten’

Ja wir waren wieder in Basel. In der Fondation  Beyeler ist eine Gauguin-Ausstellung hauptsächlich mit Werken aus seiner Zeit in der Südsee. Natürlich waren jede Menge Leute da, aber man konnte die Bilder doch ganz gut studieren. Die Führungen werden jetzt leiser, dafür wird viel  fotografiert – vor allem die Bilder.

Yes we have been to Basel again. In the ‘Fondation Beyeler ‘ there is an exhibition about Paul Gauguin mainly with paintings of his time staying in the south sea. Of course there were a lot of people, but you could study the pictures quite good. The guided tours are now quiete, but on the other hand a lot more photos of the pictures now are taken.

Mit Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903) präsentiert die Fondation Beyeler einen der berühmtesten und faszinierendsten Künstler überhaupt. Rund fünfzig Meisterwerke Gauguins aus internationalen Privatsammlungen und renommierten Museen lassen die Ausstellung zu einem der grossen europäischen Kulturhöhepunkte des Jahres 2015 werden. Gauguins zukunftsweisende Bilder wurden zu Ikonen der modernen Kunst und zählen zu den bedeutendsten Kulturschätzen der Welt. Mit ihren leuchtenden Farben und elementaren Formen revolutionierten sie die Kunst und begeistern noch heute.
Die Ausstellung zeigt sowohl Gauguins vielseitige Selbstporträts als auch die visionären und spirituellen Bilder aus seiner Zeit in der Bretagne. Vor allem stehen Gauguins weltbekannte, auf Tahiti entstandene Gemälde im Vordergrund: In idyllischen Landschaften erscheinen sinnliche Frauengestalten, oft von symbolhaften Tieren begleitet.
In ihnen feiert der Künstler seine Idealvorstellung von einer unversehrten exotischen Welt und verbindet darin Natur und Kultur, Mystik und Erotik, Traum und Wirklichkeit auf harmonischste Weise.
Neben Gemälden präsentiert die Ausstellung auch eine Auswahl rätselhafter Skulpturen Gauguins, welche die damals schon weitgehend verschwundene Kunst der Südsee lebendig werden lassen.
Gauguins einzigartige Schöpfungen erzählen von der Suche nach einem verlorenen Paradies auf Erden, von seinem filmreifen Künstlerleben zwischen den Kulturen, bestimmt von Leidenschaft und Abenteuergeist.

With Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903), the Fondation Beyeler presents one of the most famous and fascinating artists in history.
As one of the great European cultural highlights in the year 2015, the exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler brings together about fifty masterpieces by Gauguin from leading international museums and private collections. Gauguin’s groundbreaking paintings have become icons of modern art and are some of the most significant and valuable cultural treasures in the world. With their luminous colours and elementary forms, they revolutionised art and they still entrance viewers today.
While featuring Gauguin’s diverse self-portraits and his visionary, spiritual paintings from the time he spent in Brittany, the exhibition focuses on the world-famous paintings he created in Tahiti. In those depictions of sensual female figures set amidst idyllic landscapes and often accompanied by emblematic animals, the artist celebrates his ideal of an unspoilt exotic world. Gauguin’s masterpieces convey an exceptional harmony between nature and culture, mysticism and eroticism, dream and reality. In addition to the paintings, the exhibition includes a selection of Gauguin’s outstanding sculptures that evoke the largely vanished art of the South Seas.
Gauguin’s remarkable creations tell of his quest for a lost paradise on earth, of his turbulent history as an artist who moved between different cultures during a life marked by passion and adventure.

Außerhalb des Gebäudes geht es etwas ruhiger zu. Das Ausstellungsgebäude liegt wirklich wunderschön.
Outside of the building it was more tranquil. The building of the exhibition has a real beautiful surrounding.

Obwohl das Wetter nicht so berauschend war, fuhren wir zu den Meriangärten. Ich dachte, diese würden irgendwie mit der Malerdynastie Merian zu tun haben – nein, denen dies einst gehörten hießen so. Jedenfalls ist es sehenswert (das sage ich ja meist). .

Although the weather was not really nice, we went to the ‘Meriangardens’. I thought there is a link between these gardens and the painters Merian - but no the former owners were named Merian. But nevertheless it is a visit worth (this I mentioned in most cases). 

 

Die Pflanzung ist wirklich Mut zur Farbe.
The planting is really courage for color.

Nachdem wir uns gestärkt hatten, wurde das Gelände erkundigt. Die Mühle war zur Besichtigung offen.

After we eat something, we discovered the site. The mill was open for visitors.

 

  Dann ging es in den Nutzgarten.

Eigentlich dachte ich Schierling sei sehr giftig – scheinbar nicht für alle.

In fact I thought spotted hemlock is very poisonous – but it seems not for everybody.

Wofür diese Rankgerüste wohl sind? Vielleicht weiß das jemand.
For what use these trellises are? Maybe somebody know it.

 

 

Tiere gibt es auch – damit ihnen nicht langweilig wird haben sie Weidengebilde.

There are animals as well – and that they are bored they have some continuous woven willows.

  Dann ging es in die Gärten – eigentlich nur in den Zauberwald, da er in dieser Jahreszeit seinen Auftritt hatte.
And then we went into the gardens – actually in the magic wood, because at this season it has is big entrance.
