Oper Ariadne auf Naxos vor Weihnachten – Opera ‚Ariadne auf Naxos’ some days before Christmas

Es ist gut, daß die Weihnachtsvorbereitungen vom Opernabonnement unterbrochen wurden. Sonst hätte ich wahrscheinlich meinen Lieblingsweihnachtsfilm ‚Der kleine Lord’ den Vorzug gegeben.
Die Oper hat mich aber entschädigt, obwohl ich kein Freund von Richard Strauß bin. Der findet immer nämlich immer kein Ende, aber diesmal war alles straff inszeniert.

Zum Werk

Die kokette Zerbinetta ist mit ihren buffo-Kumpanen zur Erheiterung mit einem Tanzspiel engagiert, da zuvor die tragische Oper Ariadne auf Naxos gegeben werden soll. Die Vorbereitungen zu diesem Spektakel sind in vollem Gange, als man sich gegen die Abfolge der beiden Stücke und für ihre Vermischung entscheidet. So kommen sich einerseits die eigentlich von der Liebe enttäuschte Ariadne und der junge Gott Bacchus näher, während andererseits Zerbinetta ein keckes Spiel mit ihren vier Liebhabern treibt...
Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos – eine Oper in der Oper, ein Zwitterwesen, in dem Tragödie und Komödie, Mythos und Ironie verschwimmen. In dieser Verquickung steckt der Verweis auf die (Gleich-)Berechtigung der verschiedenen Kunstformen sowie ihrer jeweiligen Kunstschaffenden.
Das Duo Strauss/Hofmannsthal gab ein prominentes Beispiel für die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit zweier Künstler unterschiedlicher Fächer. Ariadne auf Naxos – ihr drittes Gemeinschaftswerk. 1912 fand die Uraufführung (Regie: Max Reinhardt). In dieser Version fungierte Ariadne auf Naxos allerdings nur als Einlage für Hofmannsthals Bearbeitung von Molières Der Bürger als Edelmann. Die Trennung von Oper und Sprechtheater innerhalb des Werkes und die komplexe Verschachtelung der Handlungsstränge stießen beim Publikum jedoch auf Unverständnis und Ablehnung. Komponist und Librettist zogen ihre Konsequenz: Die Rollen wurden – bis auf eine – durchkomponiert, die Rahmenhandlung in ein eigenes Vorspiel verschoben. Die Premiere dieser (zweiten) Ariadne auf Naxos vier Jahre später war schließlich ein großer Erfolg.

It is quite nice that there is an interruption of the Christmas preparations because of our subscription of the opera Frankfurt. Otherwise I would have preferred to see my favourite Christmas film ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy’. But the opera compensate it, although I am not a friend of Richard Strauß. He never finds an end, but this time the production was straight.

About the piece

Coquettish Zerbinetta and her buffo buddies have been engaged to provide some light entertainment after a performance of Ariadne auf Naxos, a tragic opera. Preperations for the evening are in full swing when they hear that it has been decided that both items should be performed together, instead of one after the other. How can one possibly combine the story about Ariadne and her young god Bacchus with Zerbinetta playing a cheeky game with her four lovers...
Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos is an opera in an opera, an hermaphrodite in which tragedy, comedy, myth and irony become blurred, in which the claims for equal rights for different art forms and their artists are upheld. Strauss/Hofmannsthal were a perfect example of fruitful collaboration between two artists from different fields. Ariadne auf Naxos was their third joint project. The world premiere (directed by Max Reinhardt) took place in 1912, with Ariadne auf Naxos following on from Hofmannsthal’s adaptation of Molière’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The combination of spoken theatre followed by opera and the complicated interweaving of the two stories was met with incomprehension by the audience. Composer and librettist took the obvious step: all the roles – except one – were through-composed and the story forming the framework was given its own prelude. The first performance of this (second) Ariadne auf Naxos two years later was a great success.

Synopsis

The richest man in Vienna has commissioned a new opera. During preparations for the performance of Ariadne auf Naxos the music teacher receives word that a troupe of comedians have been engaged to jolly up the audience after opera. He complains that this would be extremely disrespectful to the serious nature of his pupil's new work. Zerbinetta, the dancing master and her buffo chums Harlekin, Scaramuccio, Truffaldin and Brighella are planning how to make the guests laugh again after the boring opera. Word now comes from the master of the house that both works must now be performed simultaneously so that the highlight of the evening, a firework display, can begin on time. This is too much for the composer. The dancing master tellls him that if he cannot shorten his score his work will not be performed at all. He need not worry about how the comedians will fit in: they are professionals. He begins to make cuts before his nightmare begins: Ariadne auf Naxos - a tragicomedy. Nymphs tell of Ariadne's sadness until the mourning woman herself sings about Theseus, forgetting, remembering, love and longing for death. The buffo troupe joins in from time to time, trying everything they can think of to cheer Ariadne up, to no avail. Bacchus' arrival is announced, he is delighted to have escaped Circe's clutches. When Bacchus becomes aware of his divinity and Ariadne of her ability to love again, Zerbinetta's credo proves well-founded: „when a new god approaches, we surrender without a word.“ The composer does not know what to think about this Ariadne auf Naxos. Before he can make up his mind he is dragged from his thoughts by the enthusiastic audience and ensemble.

3. Advent der zweite Weihnachtsmarkt – 3. Advent the secondsd Christmas market

Nachdem die Gärtnerin in der Weihnachtszeit einen Minijob bei einer großen Buchhandlung hat – Kisten mit Büchern und sonstigem Zeug (ich sage nur Lillifee) auspacken - hat ist das Verreisen unter der Woche nicht mehr so leicht möglich. Aber einen weiteren Weihnachtsmarkt wollte ich doch noch besuchen. Regensburg mit dem Schloß klang nicht schlecht. Regensburg ist ohnehin eine schöne Stadt mit schmalen Gassen und Spaziergängen an der Donau. 

Because the head gardener is working during Christmas time in a big bookshop – unload boxes of books and other stuff (I only say Lillifee) – going on a journey during the week is impossible. But as I wanted to visit another Christmas market - Regensburg with the castle sounded quite nice. Regensburg is a lovely little city with narrow alleys and walks at the Danube. .

Außerdem standen vier Adventsmärkte zur Auswahl.
There were actually four Christmas markets to choose.
Zuerst besuchten wir das Schloß. Da bezahlte man erst mal EUR 7,00 pro Person und Besuch. Schön war, daß Fackeln brannten (das Petroleum hat entsprechend gerochen) und überall Öfen standen, an die man sich zum Essen oder Rasten setzen konnte. Es gab fast nur Ess- und Trinkstände, ein wenig Kunsthandwerk (an einer Hand abzuzählen) und sonst das übliche, was man in Geschäften unter dem Jahr bekommt. Dazu Weihnachtsmusik aus der Konserve und in der Schänke am Turm nicht ganz jugendfreie Musik (Unterhosenparty u.ä.). Also man/frau hätte darauf verzichten können.
First we visited the market in the castle. Here we had to pay EUR 7,00 per person and visit. It was nice, that there were torches (but you could smell the petroleum) and open fires where you could sit and eat. But most of the stalls had food and drinks, a few were with craftspeople (it could be counted on the finger of one hand) and otherwise the usual, you can buy in a shop during all the year. Furthermore only canned Christmas songs and at the far end in the tavern of the castle music, which was not quite clean (party with underwear and the like). So man/woman could give this a miss.

Die anderen Weihnachtsmärkte waren ähnlich – nur ohne Musik und Eintritt. Ein einziger Markt hatte Kunsthandwerk – das wöchentlich wechselt.
The other Christmas markets were mostly the same –only without music and admission fee. Only one market was with handicraft – there the craftspeople.

Regensburg hat uns aber so gut gefallen. Da gab es den Gänsepredigerbrunnen und viele Tändler auch mit Weihnachtsschmuck. Waren leider zu – gut für den Geldbeutel.

But we liked Regensburg. There was the nice ‘Gänsepredigerbrunnen’ and a lot of triflers with old Christmas decoration. Unfortunately they were closed – or fortunately for my purse.

 

 

Aber wegen Weihnachtsmärkten – kann man vergessen. Was auch schön war, daß einige Leute mit Laterne unterwegs waren.
But only for the Christmas market – you can forget it. Nice was as well, that there were a lot of people on the road with lanterns.  

Ausstellung im Textilmuseum Haslach - Exhibition in Textilmuseum

Wie jedes Jahr, wenn die Kurse stattfinden, gibt es eine Sonderausstellung im Textilmuseum, sowie eine Ausstellung im Museum selbst.
As every year, when there are the workshops, there is a special exhibition in the textilmuseum as well as an exhibition in the museum. Unfortunately the descriptions of the exhibitions are only in German available. But in the link, you will see some nice photos.

The Plain-Stripe-Check-Project
Die Sonderausstellung im Rahmen des Sommersymposiums Textile Kultur Haslach 2013 fand zwischen 15. Juli und 15. September statt. Sie trug den Titel "Plain - Stripe - Check" und präsentierte die Arbeiten des englischen Textildesigners Tim Parry-Williams und dder japanischen Weberin Ikuko Ida, die die Gemeinsamkeiten der grundlegenden und universell gültigen Gewebemusterungen veranschaulichten, die die beiden Kulturen ihrer Herkunftsländer verbinden.

Faszination Musterbuch
Vom Durchblättern alter Stoffmusterbücher geht eine große Faszination aus. Die komprimierte Vielfalt an Farben, Formen und Techniken lässt uns in vergangene Zeiten eintauchen und den Reichtum historischer Textilproduktion und Alltagskultur erahnen. Am 15. Juni 2013 drehte sich im Textilen Zentrum Haslach daher anlässlich des Tags der Volkskultur alles um das Phänomen MUSTER. Begleitend fand die Sonderausstellung FASZINATION MUSTERBUCH statt, bei der neben Mühlviertler Musterbüchern eine Vielzahl an Musterbüchern aus der HTL Spengergasse in Wien der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurde, die 2013 ins Archiv des Textilen Zentrums Haslach eingingen.
Aufgrund des großen Interesses wird die Sonderausstellung ab 24. September 2013 bis Frühling 2014 im Textilen Zentrum Haslach wieder gezeigt

der erste Weihnachtsmarkt - the first Christmas market

 

Der Bückeburger Weihnachtsmarkt – oder wie er genannt wird Weihnachtszauber – stand schon lange auf meiner Liste. Aber ich wusste nicht, wo Bückeburg liegt (Asche auf mein Haupt), und somit auch nicht, wie komme ich mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln – sprich Bahn – da überhaupt hin. Da dieses Jahr unter dem Motto ‚Österreichische Weihnachten’ stand und ein Chor aus Windischgarsten, das in der Nähe des Ortes liegt, wo ich aufgewachsen bin, gab es kein Hindernis. Sogar das Aufstehen um 4.00 Uhr in der Früh nahmen ich (und der Wiesenmanager) hin. Und es hat sich gelohnt. Der Weihnachtsmarkt ist riesig. Da wir schon so früh da waren, konnten wir den Rundgang im Schloß in Ruhe machen. Und dann war auch noch im Flur ein oberösterreichische Aussteller mit schöner Ware. So konnte man gut im Dialekt ‚ratschen’, während er mir meinem erworbenen Schaukelpferdchen aus Teig, ein ‚Mascherl’ in rot umband – das weiße gefiel mir nicht so.

Dann war natürlich der Chor aus Windischgarsten dran. Auch da wurde vorher geratscht. Und nachdem meine zwei Lieblingslieder ‚Oba heidschi-bumbeischi’   oder ‚es wird scho glei dumpa’ nicht im Programm hatten, haben sie mir zum Abschied doch noch ‚Oba heidschi bumbeidschi’ gesungen.  Das war wirklich ein schönes Adventsgeschenk für mich.
It was a long time on my list the Bückeburger Christmas market – or how it is called the Christmas magic, how it is called. But I didn’t know, where Bückeburg is (I know, I have to wear sackcloth and ashes) and therefore I didn’t know at all how to travel there by public transport – call it train.  But this year the motto was ‘Austrian Christmas’ and a choir from Windischgarsten – a town near the village where I grew up – there was no further obstacle. Also to get up at 4 o’clock in the morning I (and the meadow manager) accepted. And it was worthwhile. The market is big. But as we were there quite soon, we could enjoy a quiet tour of the palace. And there was an exhibitor of Upper Austria with nice goods. So I could chat in dialect, during he changed the white bow tie in a red one – because I didn’t like the white one.
Then was the performance of the choir of Windischgarsten. Also here we had a chat with various members. Unfortunately they hadn’t the two songs I like to hear – ‘es wird scho glei dumpa’ and ‘obaHeidschi bumbeidschi’ in their stock; they were singing ‘oba Heidschi bumbeidschi’ as a farewell. That was a really nice gift for the first advent for me.

 

Die Hofreitschule war schön und interessant. Es wurde ein Fechtkampf zu Pferde gezeigt – die Pferde wurden früher für den Krieg erzogen.
Fazit: es war ein wunderschöner erster Advent.
The (Spanish) riding school was gorgeous and quite interesting.  They showed a fencing bout on horses – in ancient times the horses are trained for the war.
In the end: it was a wonderful first Advent.
